About

Introduction

The Department started its journey in 1955 with the inception of the College.

Honours Course was introduced in 2012.

Medium of Teaching: Bengali and English.

The two basic principles introduced to the students from the very first day that are to be followed throughout their entire duration of study in the College and also later in life are:

  1. Discipline First and Discipline Must in life.
  2. Never shy away from asking questions in the class and outside the class.  Asking questions is the Socratic Method of Teaching and Learning.

In all academic sessions, for both odd and even semesters,   the  classes are taken regularly as per the routine drawn by the Routine Committee following the norms of CSR.  All students are notified  at the commencement of classes  at the new session/ at the end of the semester exams along with the detailed syllabus.

During the period of lockdown, following the protocol of the Covid 19, the Department switched to the online mode of organizing classes via Google Meet, Conference calls and other available electronic modes. A revised routine had been drawn to meet the need of the hour.

All Semester Exams are  taken following the Calcutta University Schedule.

The Department has a well stocked Seminar Library with standard text books and reference books over and above the main library of the College. The students can also avail of books  from the Gyandhara Collection.

Highlights of the Department:

The students have a very close relationship with the teachers of the Department that gets reflected both in academic and in extra-academic activities. Separate Whatsapp groups are formed with the students of every semester where they can communicate with the teachers of the department during and after the college hours and also during holidays, recess and vacation.

Teaching Method

  • Mostly Chalk and Talk. Students are always encouraged to use the library.
  • To give better exposure, the Department organizes special lectures by experts in the field on a  regular basis.
  • ICT tools are  frequently used  both in the class and outside the class.
  • Study materials in hardcopies are distributed in the class. Softcopies in pdf or doc version are uploaded  in the whatsapp groups of the students.. Web links are given as reference.
  • Special online classes are conducted during the recess and other holidays.
  • Students are asked to give class presentation in front of their classmates and the teacher.

To establish a two way communication link, Parent Teacher Meetings are organized regularly. The parents are apprised of the progress of their wards.  Parents are also given the telephone numbers of the teachers of the department so that they can directly reach them.

In May 2023, for the first time, the Department successfully organized a reunion with its ex-students.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the Department of Political Science of Women’s Christian College and several combined and exchange activities both at academic  and extra academic level are organized between the two colleges.

The Department has organized a couple of collaborative Programmes with the Department of Political Science of New Alipore College.

The Department also participates in collaborative activities with other colleges such as Jogesh Chaudhuri College, Netajinagar College for Women, as well, with whom MoUs have been signed.

Highlights of Activities of the Department outside the Curriculum
