About

Established in 1955, the Department of English, Deshbandhu College for Girls has always striven to create an atmosphere where the study and appreciation of literature would be an enriching experience. The Honours course was introduced in 1999. In Paper VIII of the Third Year of the Honours Course, Indian Writing in English is taught as the Optional Paper. Regular class lectures, films, audio visual aids, Power Point Presentations, group quizzes, play and poetry readings are regular features of the teaching-learning process of the Department.

International Symposium

Feminist Musings

Date: 14.12.2022

 

An International Symposium, titled FEMINIST MUSINGS was organized by the Department of English and IQAC, Deshbandhu College for Girls on 14th December, 2022. Two stalwarts from the field of Humanities. Dr. Krishna Sen, Professor and former Head of the Department of English, University of Calcutta and Dr. Sonia Amin, Professor and former Chair of History Dacca University delivered talks on two diverse aspects of Feminism. Dr. Krishna Sen spoke on Eco Feminism and sustainability and Dr Sonia Amin on Making of the New Muslim Woman thereby covering both the activist and academic perspectives of Feminism. Professor Dr. Sen discussed the various schools and the different nuances of Eco Feminist thought and praxis; and Professor Dr. Amin elaborated on the contours of female self expression in the Islamicate world of late Colonial Bengal.

 

A Screening of Macbeth

A Collaborative Activity under MoU with Charuchandra College, Kolkata

The Department of English, Deshbandhu College for Girls, Kolkata, in collaboration with Charuchandra College, Kolkata, signed a MOU in November 2022 to conduct student and teacher related events for the benefit of both colleges. The film Macbeth was screened on 23.06.2023 in Deshbandhu College for Girls and both teachers and students of the Department of English of both colleges attended the event. 

 

Invited Special Lecture by Dr. Parjanya Sen

(organized as part of MoU with Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College)

As part of a Memorandum of Agreement between Deshbandhu College for Girls, Kolkata and Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College, Kolkata, Dr. Parjanya Sen, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, gave a special Invited Lecture on Hérge’s Tintin in Tibet, a text from the CBCS English (Honours) syllabus, on 03.10.2023. The lecture was delivered at Gokhale Memorial Girls’s college and was attended by the students and faculty of both colleges.

 

 

Film Screening of Satyajit Ray’s Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World)

Event Date: 06.10.2023

 

Satyajit Ray’s 1984 Bengali film Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) was screened as a departmental activity for the students of the Fifth Semester CBCS English Honours on 6th October, 2023. The film is an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s 1916 novel of the same name, that was translated into English in 1919 by Rabindranath’s nephew, Surendranath Tagore.

Dr. Sen, who teaches this text as part of the DSE-A1 Paper under the CBCS system, gave a brief introduction to the film, discussed the differences with the text and examined why the film remains an important period drama putting into context the Swadeshi Movement of early-20th century Bengal that serves as the text’s (and film’s) backdrop.



Film Screening of George Cukor’s My Fair Lady

Event Date: 16.10.2023

 

George Cukor’s 1964 film My Fair Lady was screened as a departmental activity for the students of the semester V on 16th October, 2023. The film is an adaptation of the text “Pygmalion” by George Bernard Shaw. The film was preceded by a brief introduction by Dr. Annapurna Palit, who spoke on the film and other adaptations of “Pygmalion”.

 

Play Reading Session on Vijay Tendulkar’s Silence! The Court is in Session

Event Date: 22.11.2023

 

A play reading session on Vijay Tendulkar’s Silence! The Court is in Session was held on 22.11.2023. Students of semester V of the Department of English participated in the play reading session. The exercise was enjoyable as well as a departure from the monotony of the class lectures. Students participated in it enthusiastically and the learning process became more enjoyable.

 

Guardians’ Meet

Date: 04/01/2024

 

The Department of English organised a guardians’ meet on 4th January, 2024, which was attended by guardians of the students of the department. The parents accompanied their wards to attend the meeting, which took place in room 5. All the faculty members of the department addressed the guardians. Dr. Annapurna Palit, Associate Professor of English explained the purpose of the meeting to the guardians. She also reflected on the role of the department and the institution in the students’ academic and emotional development. The guardians were requested to share their views and feedback on the department as well as the college.

 

Play Reading Session on Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House

Event Date: 16.03.2024

A play reading session on Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House was held on 16.03.2024. Students of semester VI of the Department of English participated in the play reading session. The exercise was enjoyable. It provided a break from the stereotypical chalk and talk method of teaching. Students participated in it enthusiastically and the learning process became more enjoyable.

 

 

Departmental Quiz

Date: 14/11/2024

The Department of English conducted a quiz for the students of semester 1 of the department on 14/11/2024. Questions spread across English literature were posed to the students who had just joined the course, to familiarize them with different writers, books and genres of English literature. Dr. Annapurna Palit conducted the quiz which was both an enjoyable and learning experience for students.

 

Guardians’ Meet

Date: 19/11/2024

 

The Department of English organised a guardians’ meet on 19.11.2024, which was attended by guardians of the students of the department. Dr. Annapurna Palit, Associate Professor of English, first addressed the guardians, this was followed by addresses by Smt. Saloni Pramanik, Assistant Professor and Dr. Parjanya Sen, Assistant Professor of the department. Finally, Dr. Anita Chattopadhyay Gupta, Principal of the college spoke to the guardians. The guardians also expressed their views on the department and to the college. They seemed satisfied and appreciated the efforts of the department in teaching their wards.

 

 

Alumnae Meet 

Date:   19/11/2024

 

The Department of English organized an Alumnae Meet on 19th November, 2024 in room 5 of the college building. Students of the department were happy to reconnect with their teachers and revisit the college premises. 

The teachers of the department, Dr. Annapurna Palit, Dr. Parjanya Sen and Smt. Saloni Pramanik along with the principal of the college, Dr. Anita Chattopadhyay Gupta addressed the students and took part in sharing snippets of college life. Amidst photographs, refreshments and warm interactions a happy reunion took place.

 

Play Reading Session on G.B. Shaw’s Pygmalion

Date: 22/11/2024

 

The Department of English had a play reading session on G.B. Shaw’s Pygmalion. Students of semester 5 of the department and Dr Annapurna Palit who teaches the text participated in the play reading. The exercise was enjoyable as well as a break from the monotony of class lectures. Students participated with enthusiasm and the learning process became more enjoyable.

 

Screening of Peter Kosminsky’s Wuthering Heights

 Date: 05.12.2024

 

Ascreening of the 1992 film adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, directed by Peter Kosminsky and starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche was organized by Dr. Parjanya Sen, Assistant Professor (Stage II) for the students of all three semesters of the Department of English on Wednesday, 05.12.2024.Bronte’s text is part of the CBCS Semester 5 Syllabus of the University of Calcutta. The text was taught by Dr. Annapurna Palit, Associate Professor of the Department. The principal of the college, Dr. Anita Chattopadhyay Gupta, addressed the students before the screening. The screening was instrumental in enriching the understanding of the novel through cinematic exposure through Audio-Visual ICT.
