The Department of Geography is an actively participating part of Deshbandhu College for Girls. It has engaged the students into various curricular and extra-curricular activities. The department is laboratory based hence teaches with the help of modern digital gadgets, electronic devices, instruments, equipment. We believe in teaching with the help of first-hand knowledge by taking the students to field visits and learning through projects, encouraging them to build models, make posters, watching documentary film shows, preparing wall magazines, participating in multiple events within and beyond our institution. The following activities were held from session 2020-21 to 2023-24:
- An awareness on Bio-medical waste generation in Kolkata: The Department of Geography has conducted an awareness cum educational trip, a group of 8 students on 5th April 2022 to visit West Bengal Pollution Control Board (Paribesh Bhawan). The students interacted and accessed several Governmental reports, data which were of great help to their academic project writing.
- Students’ week observation -Due to COVID situation guardian meet (regarding students’ week observation from 01.01.2022-07.01.2022) was held online on 02.01.2022.Teachers interacted with the guardians regarding scope for improvement of students.
- Excursion Vizag – Araku had Borra Caves as the prime focus. The caves are located in the Araku Valley of the Ananthagiri hill range and is drained by the Gosthani River. At the entry, the cave measures up to 100 m (330 ft) horizontally and 75 m (246 ft) vertically. Stalagmite and stalactite formations are found in the caves. The students learnt the importance of weathering agents, chemical reaction shaping massive limestone into cave. The students had also visited the famed Padmapuram gardens located in the beautiful and serene valley of Araku.
- Documentary film show on George Mallory
The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest is a 2010 theatrical-release feature documentary film about the British climber George Mallory who disappeared on Mount Everest in 1924 with his climbing partner Andrew Irvine. The film interweaves two stories, one about climber Conrad Anker (who discovered Mallory's body lying on Everest in 1999) returning to Everest to investigate Mallory's disappearance and the other a biography of Mallory told through letters (read by Ralph Fiennes and Natasha Richardson, in her final film), original film footage from the 1920s and archival photos. The film show was attended by 66 students including faculty members. - Alumni Meet
Alumnae is an asset that can provide mutually beneficial relationships over time. We have active alumnae since 20 years. They have contributed in organising exhibition cum sale in past. They have co-ordinated to collect resources to donate books to departmental seminar library also. We have created a group where we share important opportunity regarding jobs, employment, showcase, training, workshops, seminars etc which benefit the ex-students from time to time. Our Alumni meet was held on 6.6.2023 attended by Batch 2019,2020,2021,2022, a total of 20 students. They refreshed our old happy memories. - Observed World Environment Day 2023
The West Bengal Pollution Control Board always inspires the common people including students and teachers of schools and colleges to be concerned about the environment. Our students have participated in this cause on 05.06.2024 to be a part of the awareness programme so that they can inspire their friends, families, neighbours, community members regarding the necessary efforts needed to make our environmental pollution free. - Student Achievements
Students participate in various competitions and events. We are proud to declare their achievements of our students securing 1st position Sonali Dutta, 3rd position Sreyashi Kanjilal in Inter College Poster Competition on “International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” on 27 June 2023.

Our student Ritoma Rudra has secured 2nd position in Bharatnatyam dance in “15th Global Competition and 33rd International Festival of Indian Art and Culture” in cooperation with GOI. - Visit to survey of India
The 5 Semester Honours students visited Survey of India on 29.9.2023 as part of pre-field study map and data collection. They became a part of the process of collection of secondary data. They received first-hand knowledge on the steps involved in collection of data from Government offices. - Excursion to Bishnupur
The excursion to Bishnupur was held from 20.11.2023 – 23.11.2023, which involved the study of socio-economic aspects of man in relation to its physical environment. The students saw the temple town of Bishnupur- the archietecture, burnt clay brick terracotta art and carvings. The Bishnupuri silk weaving is famous as part of a primary economic activity. - Participation in Ucchash
The Department of Geography has actively taken part in college Programme: Ucchash. Our students put up food, craft stalls, and they sold handmade items and participated hugely. It was a huge success and fun for the students. - Parent Teacher Meeting
It was held to discuss the progress of students and their regularity in college. The guardians attend such events and interact with teachers widely. We listen to their problems and try to give our best solution to them regarding the performance and conduct of the students. - Alumnae Meet- On 29.06.2024 Alumni meet was held which was a platform that can provide mutually beneficial relationships over time. Our Alumni plays active role in college NSS camp. They have contributed in organising exhibition cum sale in past. They have co-ordinated to collect resources to donate books to departmental seminar library also. They have plans for future activities also. We conduct Alumni meet every session in the presence of all the Departmental faculty members and interact with our beloved ex-students.
- Poster making - The students participate in Departmental activities like awareness programmes, a poster making day was observed on 05.01.2024 National Birds Day to make the students aware of the importance of protecting birds.
- Movie show was also organised on 21.03.2024 to send the same message of protecting our environment. The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos is a 2008 British-American nature documentary that explores the great gathering of lesser flamingos which occurs every year at Lake Natron in Tanzania and along the salt lakes African the Rift Valley.
- Faculty participation in UGBOS workshop - The faculty members participates in workshops and seminars to update their knowledge base. They had visited UGBOS workshop on 30.09.2023 to enrich themselves with the change in syllabus from CBCS to CCF. They had attended one day workshop in Womens Christian College under the collaboration of UGBOS. It has helped with clearing many doubts and explore new study materials.
- InSIC Solar Ambassador Program - Our students visited InSIC Solar Ambassador Program 2024 held on 7th of May 2024. It was conducted to create more awareness on Renewable Energy based applications. The main objective of the program was to create interest and awareness among students on solar and other forms of energy as a clean energy source reducing global warming and mitigating climate change and also give hands-on exposure in the practical aspect.
- Wall magazine -The semester 5 Honours had prepared the wall magazine on 13.05.2024. They utilised their first hand educational trip experience and understanding to create this magazine. It is an educational and creative way to express messages and learn team work, sharing, co-ordination. It is a tool for learning beyond the classroom. Our students were encouraged to explore their ideas about freedom beyond the textbooks. Students made original connections with the places visited and the processes that carved them.
