About

The Department of History started its journey from 1955. The Honours course started from 1999. Now, the department has a total number of five faculty members, two full timers and three SACTs. Teachers are well qualified and sincere having a friendly attitude towards students.
The College offers both Honours and General courses in history. The Department takes care that classes are taken regularly and the syllabus is complete on time. Students are evaluated in frequent intervals and weak students are counseled and helped to overcome their difficulties.
The Department has a well equipped seminar library with a rich collection of both text and reference books.

Future Plan

• To try and help the Authority to bring at least one more substantive post for the Department.
• To organise UGC sponsored state, national and international seminars
• To organise more faculty exchange and student exchange programmes with other colleges in future.
• To invite eminent academicians, in more regular intervals, to deliver special lectures on different topics within the syllabus for the benefit of the students.
• To enrich the departmental Seminar Library to a greater extent
• To transform the room allotted to the History Department into a smart classroom in order to make more efficient use of the ICT tools for more effective teaching.
• To organise more educational tours for students
• To organise at least one alumnae meet of the Department each year.
• To publish a collection of essays, on behalf of the Department of History, on the life and works of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das.

Activities

  • The students of the department prepared a number of posters on varied subjects of historical importance. They also participated in a number of project works on various current affairs under the guidance of the teachers.
  • The Department organised educational tour as well as seminar. A special lecture on Women’s Education in Bengal during the late 19th century and early 20th centuries by Rachana Chakravorty was organised on 1st December, 2016.
  • The department organised two special lectures by eminent scholars on some very interesting and phenomenal historical topics. Historian Dr. Siddhartha Guha Ray, Professor of Behala Vivekananda Thakurpukur College and also the writer of quite a large number of books and articles, delivered a very enlightening lecture on “French Revolution”.
  • Historian Dr. Amit Bhattacharya, Professor of Jadavpur University and a specialist in the history of China and Japan also rendered a very thought provoking talk on “Women and the Chinese Revolution” Both the talks were of enormous help to the students and the teachers as well.
  • Recently the department organised an educational tour for the students to Murshidabad which, as all know, is a place of enormous historical importance. The students visited almost all the sites of historical relevance like the Hajarduari Palace, Imambara, House of Jagath Seth,  Motijhil,  Katra  Masjid,  Tomb  of Ajimunnesha  Jahankosha  canon,  Nashipur palace, Kathgola Palace etc. It was no doubt a worth remembering experience for both the students and the teachers.
  • A special Lecture on “Christianity and Judaism Under Islam” by Dr Amit Dey, Professor of History, University of Calcutta on 17.4.2019.
  • One Day Seminar On “Islamic Pluralism; Relation With Christianity And Judaism In Medieval World” On 13.5.2019 Speakers: Dr Amit Dey, Professor Of History, University Of Calcutta And Dr Kaustav Chakrabarti, Assistant Professor, City College, Kolkata.
  • The Department of History undertook a number of activities during the academic session 2020-2021. Though it was the year of the Pandemic, still the Department went out of its way to stay up-to-date.  The students of the department prepared a number of posters and wall magazines on varied subjects of historical importance. With the introduction of ICT tools in this period, it became easier to take online classes through Google Meet and also the department conducted audio classes for the next session.
  • A Special Lecture by Dr. Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, Emeritus Professor Of History, University Of Wellington, New Zealand On “Does Caste Matter In Bengal?” On 12.11.2022. 
  • Faculty And Students Exchange Programme Organised By Departments of History, Deshbandhu College For Girls And K.K. Das College, Kolkata On, June 15, 2023. The programme was held to cover some very important portions of the syllabus of the Fourth Semester Honours Course. Two Speakers Who Delivered Lectures In The Programme Were Prof. Sarmishtha Bandyopadhyay, Associate Professor Of History Of Deshbandhu College For Girls And Dr. Sreyashi Sarkar, Assistant Professor Of History Of K.K. Das College. The topic on which Professor Sarmishtha Bandyopadhyay delivered her talk was the Printing Revolution in the 15th century, that started in Europe and then spread to the whole world and also its impact on the contemporary society and culture. Dr. Sreyashi Sarkar delivered her lecture on the emergence of the National Monarchy in England and its contribution to the making of New England.
  • The Alumnae Meet of The Department Of History 0n June 19, 2023.
  • The Online Faculty And Students Exchange Programme between Departments Of History Deshbandhu College For Girls And Gurudas College On May 28, 2024 And June 24, 2024. In the Programme, Prof Sarmishtha Bandyopadhyay, Associate Professor in History, Deshbandhu College For Girls, delivered her lecture on the “Birth of Israel”, which no doubt is an extremely important and relevant theme in context to present day international politics. Dr. Gopa Mukherjee, Associate Professor in History, Gurudas College, addressed the issue of communalism in colonial India which ultimately led to the partition of the country in 1947. This is also a very interesting area of knowledge for understanding the modern socio-political history of our country.
  • A Film Screening was held on 9.12.2024 where Chiriakhana directed by Satyajit Ray was shown to the students.
  • A Special Lecture was organised by the Department where Asst. Prof. Kathika Ray of Rabindra Bharati Mahavidyalaya spoke on “History of Modern East Asia: China (c. 1840-1949)” on 13th December, 2024.
