The Department of Economics was established in 1955 and has moved forward as a subject in the general course since then. The subject received a warm response amongst the students seeking admission in the college and gradually became popular not only among the pure general students but a mass of students pursuing B.A, B.Sc. Honours as well. The subject relates to real life phenomena in and around the economy not only in the country but also to the whole world, a reason which intrigues the students to take up and learn the subject, even more.

The interest of the students in the subject has compelled the authorities to contemplate about introducing Honours Course for the subject from the upcoming session. It would definitely lead to a more enriched department and in course of time will gain even more popularity once the students get a chance to mutually exchange their views and thoughts with the faculty at ease.
• Online Distinguished Lecture Programme organized by the Dept. of Economics & Dept. of Environmental Science on 10th July 2021. Dr. Sugata Marjit, First Distinguished Professor, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Project Director, Center for Training and Research in Public Finance and Policy, India, Editor In Chief, South Asian Journal of Macroeconomics & Public Finance (SAGE, India/UK), Former Vice Chancellor, University of Calcutta, Former Chairman, West Bengal State Council of Higher Education, Former Director, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. Topic:“ Post-Pandemic Indian Economy ”
• 2021-2022, being the period of Pandemic Lockdown, virtual classes were conducted on a regular basis as per the routine and as per the convenience of the teachers and the students.
•Online Special Lecture in Economics on "State of State Finances in India: Issues and way Forward" was held on 23rd June 2023.
•Honourable speaker who graced the occasion:
Dr. Jayanta Kumar Dwibedi, Associate Professor of Economics, Brahmananda Keshab Chandra College, Executive Member, Society for Economic Research in Bengali(SERB).
EVENT REPORT 2018-2023 and Onwards
2018-2019
The Dept. of Economics in collaboration with the Dept. of Commerce, Deshbandhu College for Girls presented a ONE DAY SEMINAR ON “CURRENT ISSUES IN GLOBALIZATION” sponsored by State Bank of India, Rashbehari Avenue Branch Kolkata on 25th April 2019, 10:30 am onwards at the college premises. Honourable speakers who graced the occasion were Dr. Abhirup Sarkar, Prof (Dr.) Saibal Kar, Prof (Dr.)Kausik Gupta and Dr. Sajal Das. About 30-40 students participated in this thought provoking seminar along with the college teachers, speakers and dignitaries.
2019-2020 (EVENT 1)
“International Webinar on Covid 19 Pandemic:Exploring its Economic , Health and Environmental Consequences was organised by the Dept. of Environmental Science in collaboration with Dept. of Economics , Deshbandhu Colleg for Girls on 16th July 2020 6pm onwards.Honourable Speaker who graced the occasion was Professor Dr. Sajal Lahiri, Vandeveer Chair Professor of Economics and Distinguished, Scholar, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA. About 412 participants attended the webinar and made the programme a grand success.
2019-2020: (EVENT 2)
Dept. of Education and Dept. of Economics of New Alipore College in collaboration with Dept. of Economics and Dept. of Education Deshbandhu College for Girls arranged a students webinar on “Aims of Modern Education “and “Centre Spending on Elementary Education” on 4th February 2020.Students from Semester IV and VI from the Department of Education & Economics acted speakers in the programme. There were about 66 participants who got the opportunity to share their insights on the topic.
2019-2020( EVENT 3)
Dept. of Education and Dept. of Economics of New Alipore College in collaboration with Dept. of Economics and Dept. of Education arranged an online Special Lecture on “Experiences of Government Sponsored Educational Policies in Indian States” on 21st April 2020. Speakers for the programme were Prof. Archita Pramanik and Prof. Sanjukta Ghosh. About 75 participants participated in the event and found the session to be extremely informative.
2020-2021: (EVENT 1)
Dept. of Education and Dept. of Economics of New Alipore College in collaboration with Dept. of Economics and Dept. of Education Deshbandhu College for Girls arranged a Webinar on “Equity in Intra State Distribution of Public Spending on Education” on 12th September 2020. Shri Samantak Chattopadhyay, Research Fellow in Economics , Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta (CSSS) graced the occasion. About 95 participants attended the webinar and were enriched by the end of the session.
2020-2021: (EVENT 2)
Dept. of Education and Dept. of Economics of New Alipore College in collaboration with Dept. of Economics and Dept. of Education Deshbandhu College for Girls arranged a Webinar on “National Education policy 2020” on 24th March 2021. Dr. Debashis Dhar, Ex. TIC, Gopal Chandra Memorial College of Education, New Barrackpore was the speaker of the webinar. Through this webinar about 87 participants gained fruitful knowledge about the newly introduced education policy.
2021-2022: (EVENT 1)
An Online Distinguished Lecture Programme was organized by the Dept. of Economics & Dept. of Environmental Science , Deshbandhu College for Girls on 10th July 2021. The eminent speaker for the occasion was Dr. Sugata Marjit who delivered his lecture on “Post-Pandemic Indian Economy” and Dr.Shyamal Roy, whose topic was “ Tales to tell you: Creative enterprises during epidemics ”. There were about 80 participants who attended this enlightening session.
2021-2022: (EVENT 2)
Dept. of Education and Dept. of Economics of New Alipore College in collaboration with Dept. of Economics and Dept. of Education Deshbandhu College for Girls arranged a Students Seminar on “ICT Integration in Teaching Learning Process” on 25th March 2022 where students of Semesters 2, 4 and 6 of both the colleges interacted amongst themselves. About 59 students participated in the event.
2022-2023

2023-24 (EVENT 1)
A One Day Seminar on “Reflections of Current Global Scenario on Indian Economy: Financial Issues, International Trade and Sustainable Development” was organised by the Dept. of Economics in collaboration with the Dept. of Commerce and the Dept. of Environmental Science, Deshbandhu College for Girls on 20.12.2023, 12pm onwards at the college premises. The event was sponsored by SBI, Rashbehari Avenue Branch. The eminent dignitaries who graced the occasion were Prof. (Dr.) Kausik Gupta, Prof. Pranabesh Sanyal and Prof. (Dr.) Biswajit Mondal. Approximately 60 participants attended this thought provoking session.
2023-24 (EVENT 2)
An online faculty exchange programme was organised by the Dept. of Economics, Deshbandhu College for Girls and Dept. of Economics, Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College on 10.05.2024 at 1 PM. Students from Semester II and IV of both the colleges participated in the event. Asst. Prof. Pritten Sherpa, Dept of Economics, Deshbandhu College for Girls delivered her lecture on “Public Sector and Foreign Investment in Indian Industry and Dr. Sanchita Sen, Associate Professor, Dept of Economics, Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College taught ‘Simple Keynesian Model’ to the students. The lecture was attended by 46 students.
2023-24 (EVENT 3)
An Online Invited Lecture was organised by the Dept. of Economics, Deshbandhu College for Girls on 13.05.2024 . The programme was held on G-Meet where students from Semester II and IV of Deshbandhu College for Girls participated. The programme took place from 7.00 PM - 8: 30 PM where the lecture was delivered by Dr. Sanchita Sen, Associate Professor, Dept of Economics, Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College. The Invited lecture was on “Macroeconomic Techniques in a Closed Economy”. 27 students were benefited from this lecture.
2023-24 (EVENT 4)
On 7.12.2024, the Department of Economics , Deshbandhu College for Girls, Kolkata with the active support of the Principal of the College, Dr. Anita Chattopadhyay Gupta had organised the educational tour to State Bank of India , Rashbehari Avenue , Kolkata . 19 students from the Department of Economics, BCOM and BBA were present in the tour. Around 3 pm students accompanied by the three faculties visited SBI branch in Rashbehari . The Students were warmly welcomed and a short talk by the branch Manager, Mr. Nandan Kumar Sah on the functioning of the banking system and cyber fraud. The talk was followed by the interactive session where the students put forward their queries .
